Muisjes .... a cultural celebratory snack ....



Muisjes are a food that is typically Dutch.
Similar in size and shape to Hagerslag (Sprinkles on bread), Muisjes are coated anise seeds that are served on toast like bread after the birth of a child; either blue and white for boys or pink and white for girls.
The tradition can be somewhat compared to the past North American tradition of distributing cigars.
The tradition dates back a few hundred years and it was believed that anise seeds helped with lactation in mothers.
