Amsterdam final week

We've rotated to new host families for the final time to stay in Amsterdam for the last week of the program.  We're all able to stay fairly close to the city centre and consider ourselves fortunate considering the upcoming Royal celebrations.
On Tuesday (Kings Day), no cars or even bikes will be allowed into the city because masses of people will congregate for the abdication of Queen Beatrix and the "swearing in" of Crown Prince/King Willem Alexander.
The people mainly seem supportive of the new king and his formerly Argentinian wife Maxima.
Decorations continue to be installed throughout the city and there's no question that this is going to be a huge event.  It may be safe to say that none of us have attended an event of this magnitude and that the excitement among the group is building.

This stylized banner/poster says a lot about the event.
Imagine overnight all the bus shelter, and most other street advertising changing to images like this one above to celebrate the crowning.
The design is similar to that seen on various house and building shutter throughout the region that are said to be "typically Dutch"  The W.A. initials of the new King are stylistically interwoven into the design in a modern way ... in that "innovative modern design" is also considered to be "typically Dutch".  (Apparently the Dutch foreign affairs department uses modern design and it's promotion as a pillar of its foreign affairs policy.)
Beyond street advertising, the city of Amsterdam has lined the streets with banners, the shops all have an orange explosion and a 15 story building on the north side of the harbour, visible from the Central Station, is draped from top to bottom on all side with the above photo's design.
The whole country of the Netherlands and many around the world will be watching the event.
