Day 3 Beverwijk

After a great day exploring the area based on our professions, there was a stop at the oldest existing Dutch Steam powered pumping station used to empty water from inside the Dykes.
German Bunker found in the Dune park   This steam powered pumping station had the  largest steam engine every built.  It was powered by 8 huge boilers, which burned coal.   It had one huge massive cylinder 12 feet in diameter.   It operated at a low operating steam presser of about 30 psi.  The cylinder was mounted vertically and when the steam forced the piston up it caused 8 walking beams to rise up with it. lowering the other end of the beams.  Then a heavy counter weight lowered the piston while at the same time lifting the water out of 8 lift pumps.  www.cruguiusmuseum.nf.

Scottish Cows used to control the tall grass in the park to help maintain a more natural ecosystem.

We finished the evening having dinner with the gracious Rotary hosts of Beverwijk club.
Thank you!
